The purpose of this standard is to enable the delegate to develop knowledge and understanding of using leadership and inter-personal skills to establish effective teams and achieve high levels of performance through people as required by a practising or potential site supervisor.

The delegate will be able to:

  • Describe two or more appropriate actions to enhance own leadership behaviour in the context of a correct and appropriate model of leadership.

  • Describe the stages of an established model of team formation
  • Describe two or more appropriate actions to enhance the effectiveness of own team
  • Describe a recognised theory of motivation
  • Explain how a motivational technique can be used to improve performance of own site
  • Describe the stages in the communication cycle
  • Describe two possible barriers to communication on site within a detailed and appropriate context
  • Explain why it is important to overcome barriers to communication on site
  • Describe two or more actions to improve the effectiveness of own communication skills on site in order to improve team and site performance
  • Describe how to give effective feedback
  • Explain two different types of feedback, and how each can be used to improve both individual and team performance
  • Explain how to manage a coaching process by agreeing goals and following a simple coaching model
  • Describe a tool or technique that can be used to support effective coaching
  • Identify two barriers to effective coaching within a detailed and appropriate context
  • Explain two or more suitable strategies to overcome these barriers
  • Explain the practices of persuading and influencing to explain the differences between them
  • Describe the skills required in order to persuade effectively
  • Explain a relevant technique for influencing others and how it is used to achieve objectives
