When the Stakes are High, Drama-Based Learning Delivers
Crucial conversations are the foundation of your people’s performance
When a conversation changes everything
At a major housebuilder, site leaders told us they were confident with the technical side of their role – but when it came to conversations with their teams, it was a different story. Challenging unsafe behaviours, holding people accountable, or maintaining quality standards often felt uncomfortable.
So how do you give leaders the confidence to tackle the conversations that matter most, without the risk of getting it wrong in real life?
We brought in our professional actor-facilitators to run a workshop. As with all our programmes, the session was fully interactive, but with drama-based learning participants were able to direct realistic site scenarios, test their own approaches, and experience first-hand the difference that skilful dialogue makes.
The result? Leaders left not just with theory, but with live practice in tackling conversations that mattered most. One participant summed it up:
“The workshop gave me the confidence to challenge unsafe behaviour and know how to do it constructively.”
Why drama works
This powerful approach creates impact because it feels real, but safe. Participants aren’t acting, they’re exploring:
- Seeing themselves in the characters and recognising behaviours they know.
- Directing the action to test different approaches and the benefits of trying something new
- Experiencing success in the moment; leaving knowing that they can do the same thing back on site or in the office – because they’ve already felt what it’s like to do it with confidence in the training room.
Here, Pete at Octavius shares his experience of drama-based learning with Keystone:
More than just safety
Drama-based learning is versatile and cuts across sectors and challenges. We’ve used it to:
- Shift safety mindsets with Network Rail and CEMEX UK – tackling unsafe shortcuts and building safety leadership.
- Improve customer experience with Liaison Group and West Midlands Trains – stepping into customers’ shoes and handling service challenges.
- Spark culture change with Babcock International – surfacing unspoken issues like banter and instilling inclusive leadership mindsets.
- Create immersive leadership conferences with Hollywood Bowl and The Inn Collection Group – gamifying Wembley Stadium and living history museums with character-based adventures.
- Develop crucial conversations in housebuilding, manufacturing and the UK defence sector – giving site leaders confidence to challenge unsafe behaviours constructively.
From behavioural safety to customer service and leading change, drama-based learning adapts to your context to create learning that sticks.
Why Keystone?
We don’t use drama for the sake of it. We use it where it solves a real problem, whether that’s safety, culture, or leadership.
Because our actor-facilitators understand each client’s world, the scenarios and characters are authentic. That’s why organisations like Cala Homes, Ascom, BAE Systems, and Mitsubishi – amongst many others – trust our drama based learning specialists to drive lasting change.
Final thought
Drama-based learning is versatile, memorable, and proven. If your leaders need confidence to handle the conversations that really matter – from safety leadership to culture change – let’s explore how we can help.
